Remember that ad I did with Andrew Bagley a little while back? He mentioned that he had been working on a pretty cool Augmented Reality piece for a major national magazine that would come out soon. That magazine was WIRED magazine, and the augmented reality spot was a little widget calling attention to Vampire Power.

I’ll be honest, it's not my absolute best work. I need to smile more and put more energy into these. I think that’s why they hired me in the first place, after seeing the OraBrush ads.

It's time in front of a camera, though, and I'm glad for that.

iGo Web Ad

This is the ad that a family friend had me come shoot about a month ago in Tempe, AZ.

It's a flash video without any embedding options, so go on over to the iGo.com website to check it out. I'm on the third line, the "Laptop Charger" spots.

There wasn't a lot of wiggle room on the script. When I wanted to get creative with it, the director reigned me back in. Hope you like it.

Post-Intelligence

Come April, this is the atmosphere I am graduating in. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the station I'm interning at has ^(s)laid off two dozen people in the last year, more than any other station in the market. I'm guessing the only reason I can even be there is price of interns. We're free.



Newspapers are first, but it doesn't look like local television is far behind.

Makes me feel a bit Howard Beale.

Found this thing on craigslist, saying they were looking for people with experience in front of a camera. I figured it couldn't hurt. Comparatively, I don't think I did too bad.

18 Dec 2008 UPDATE: They called me today with a gig. I couldn't make it, the shoot would be tomorrow, and I still have a lot to finish for finals. But it's good to know somebody watched it and thought I was good.

Broadcast

I'm majoring in Broadcast Journalism. Soon, I'll have a college degree in the subject. And you know what? You can learn most of what you need to know in just a few minutes. Honest. Here, I'll show you.

Current.tv is a cable network/online venture that uses fully ¹/₃ user generated content. That means people (like me) make and send in short news or other interest stories. Then Current sends them a check if they like it and want to air it. Why am I not doing this every weekend? A five minute video? Come on, I do that for fun all the time.

I already have some footage that I think will be great, can't imagine they'd turn it down. I'll get back to you, let you know if it turns out. If they like it. If they air it. If they pay me for it.

Morning Market Call

Mentioned I got a(nother) job. In addition to BYU Weekly.

A couple guys from the Graduate Finance Association in the Marriott School walked into the Brimhall yesterday. They met with one of the professors and asked for some help with a project they were starting. They want to do a daily morning webcast about finance and the markets. They know finance. They don't know webcasting.

So they were directed to me.

I'll be setting up, filming, directing, editing, and posting a short finance newscast every weekday morning starting Monday.

It should be interesting. They've given me free reign on what I want to do technically and creatively. These guys just want to practice talking finance in plain terms. They've hired me to make them look good.

They say they're going for the "RocketBoom" model several times, though I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.

If you have any suggestions, let me know. I've been brainstorming how to bootstrap this to make it look great, so we can apply for real funding.

There is in fact nothing behind the door. Only a wall. It isn't even a closet, not enough room for anything much.

Makes me wonder what I'd find if they had any wardrobes around here.

Fire Alarm Again

This is the fourth time since I started my internship that I've had to exit the building because of the ear-piercing fire alarm. It's getting a little old, but I suppose it's an insurance necessity sometimes, and a legitimate cause for alarm at others. The Fire Department came on this one, so I don't think this is a drill.

Can't Wait

I said I wouldn't see it on non-IMAX, but I also said I couldn't wait.
Turns out my impatience won out. IMAX was sold out Monday, Tuesday,
Wenesday, and all evening showings for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
That, coupled with a SiteDev team outing to the Cinerama downtown, means
I am seeing The Dark Knight in 20 minutes.
